Summary/Abstract: The representation of night in Western and Romanian painting transcends the mere description of a time of day, transforming darkness into a fundamental artistic topos, a bearer of profound meaning. This study explores the diachronic evolution of the nocturnal theme, from its initial, theophanic function in medieval art to its complex role in modernity and contemporaneity as a mirror of the psyche and society. The analysis focuses on technical concepts like chiaroscuro and tenebrism and terms such as the “nocturne,” demonstrating how stylistic innovations reflected and shaped ideological and cultural transformations. Through in-depth case studies, from Giotto and Caravaggio to Goya and Van Gogh, and from Grigorescu to contemporary artists like Adrian Ghenie, it is shown that the evolution of night’s representation is an expression of a paradigm shift in art itself—from a narrative and sacred function to an exploration of aesthetics, inner emotion, and social reality.
