Summary/Abstract: In numerous interviews, Szentkuthy identifies wonder as the essence of his life. Since, in wonder, everything is of equal value, this places an enormous burden on the formal discipline of writing. Yet the reader may justifiably doubt whether someone who continually communicates this attitude of wonder is truly capable of sustaining it. Once wonder enters the text, does it not itself become a stylising gesture, a pose akin to a mask? Should we not interpret Szentkuthy’s intention – namely, that he wishes to write life in its variability, and therefore cannot and does not wish to subordinate himself to the discipline of form – in precisely the opposite way? Is it not rather the case that he believes so strongly in the concept of life’s variability that, for this very reason, he comes to think that he cannot write life at all?
