Summary/Abstract: Although the Villány Wine Region accounts for less than 4 per cent of Hungary’s total vineyard area, it ranks among the country’s best-known and most successful wine regions, not only because of its outstanding red wines but also, among other things, because of its wine tourism. The “Villány brand” is clearly one of the emblematic success stories of the post-socialist period, yet the long history of the Villány Wine Region also contains earlier phases of prosperity. Since the Ottoman period, the interplay of German (Swabian), Serbian (Rác), and Hungarian traditions has strengthened the region’s distinctive character. Among the favourable conditions for viticulture, the natural setting must be mentioned first: the Villány Hills provide the southernmost, sun-drenched slopes in Hungary. Yet the region’s unmistakable success stems equally from the expertise and cooperation of the generations of winegrowers and winemakers who have worked there. The wine region was the first in Hungary to introduce a system of designation-of-origin protection, and it has developed wine brands known both nationally and internationally. Alongside its wines, and in ways that further reinforce them, it also established the country’s first wine tourism network, the Villány–Siklós Wine Route. Setting an example for other wine regions, it also operates a local product certification and trademark system. The study seeks to summarise these key factors behind the region’s success.
