Summary/Abstract: Interdisciplinary onomastics draws on knowledge from various scientific disciplines and, in turn, enriches them with its findings. The study examines the connections between toponomastics and translatology, and provides an overview of the laws regulating the use of bilingual street names in Slovakia. The author investigates how urbanonyms are translated from the source language into the target language and considers translation practices observed in the Slovak-Hungarian bilingual environment in southern Slovakia. When translating urbanonyms, various procedures are employed: 1. transference – the absence of translation, where the proper name is borrowed from the source language into the target language in its original form without changes; 2. transcription – transcribing the spelling of the proper name adapted to the target language; 3. substitution – replacing the proper name with its conventional equiva¬lent in the target language; 4. calque or partial semantic translation – translating the proper name or part of it with a semantically identical element in the target language; 5. full or partial modification – the most radical transformation of the name, replac-ing it with a semantically different proper name in the target language; partial modification of the information content of the proprium in the target language by adding (explication) or omitting (implication) part(s) of the proper name. The translation of urbanonyms is significantly affected by whether the name originates from a proper name (deanthroponymic, detoponymic urbanonym) or an appellative (deapellative urbanonym), so the author examines the translation processes within these categories.
