Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the case of the Russian political scientist Viacheslav Morozov, affiliated with the University of Tartu, who was arrested and convicted in 2024 in Estonia for espionage activities on behalf of the Russian secret services. Analysing the fraught relations between the Russian intelligentsia and political authorities from a long-term perspective, this article argues that a significant degree of historical continuity is discernible in this respect. Therefore, the Morozov case should also be interpreted through the lens of certain recurring patterns concerning the relations and connections between the Russian state (regardless of the period under discussion) and Russia’s intellectual milieu.
