Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the tumultuous political landscape of early Carol I’s reign in the Romanian Principalities, focusing on the tensions between the Great Powers and the linkage with liberal and conservative factions that aroused the establishment of the constitutional monarchy. The accession of a foreign prince symbolized the realization of the national political aspirations endorsed by the Romanian political elite. However, this development catalysed an intensification of disputes characterised by more than mere faction interests. The analysis highlights the emergence of passionate diplomatic practices and a contentious atmosphere fuelled by the widespread antagonism between the guaranteeing powers, which included polemics and pressure on Romanian government policy and composition, significantly shaping the internal and external politics of the time.
