Summary/Abstract: This text examines Ryszard Kapuściński’s (1932–2007) literary reportage Shah of Shahs (1982) as a work that reveals the mechanisms of power and their impact on the formation of the subject and on the subject’s discursive and behavioral patterns. The analysis focuses on the representation of the rule of Iran’s last shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, with emphasis on the events following the 1953 coup d’état and before the Iranian Revolution (1978–1979), when repression, the cult of personality, and ideological illusion reach their culmination. The text tests the hypothesis that, through the imposition of mechanisms of power – disciplining, illusory spectacle and sacralization – two types of subjects are formed: one subordinate to these mechanisms and one opposed to them. These subjects, in turn, respond in two ways: through self-censorship and discipline (of the Self and of the Other), or through resistance (an act of dismantling and empowerment).
