Summary/Abstract: This study examines a case from the history of education during the Bulgarian National Revival, illustrating the control and censorship imposed by the Ottoman authorities on Bulgarian teachers, even when their work had to do with the exact and natural sciences. Drawing our data from archival documents and secondary sources, we analyze the events during the April revival of 1876, when a teacher of physics at the school in Gabrovo was arrested for using a telegraph. Two versions are considered. The first presents the accusations of treason on the part of the Ottoman authorities, while the second regards the case as a fabricated story because of the pedagogical nature of the use of the device. The analysis dwells on the extent to which physics, being among the natural sciences, crosses paths with politics and revolutionary events.
