Summary/Abstract: Drawing on recent research and practice-based evidence, this paper examines the complex challenges of working with individuals affected by substance use disorders (SUDs) and argues for the necessity of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. People living with SUDs commonly experience intersecting health, psychological, and social difficulties, making single-sector interventions insufficient. The paper explores how the integration of health and social services can improve recovery outcomes by simultaneously addressing medical, psychological, and socioeconomic needs. Particular emphasis is placed on collaboration among social workers, healthcare professionals, mental health specialists, and community-based organizations as a foundation for coordinated and person-centred support. Preventive strategies, including community education, early risk assessment, and structured reintegration programmes focused on housing stability, employment, and social inclusion, are also discussed. Through a review of current practices and policy frameworks, the paper identifies key mechanisms for strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration and reducing fragmentation between health and social care systems. It concludes that effective synergy between treatment, social support, prevention, and reintegration is essential for improving recovery trajectories and long-term well-being among individuals affected by SUDs, with clear implications for policy development and professional practice.
