Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the role of emptiness in the works of François René de Chateaubriand, with particular emphasis on Mémoires d’outre-tombe, which is analyzed through the lens of the Geneva School and Michel Collot’s theory of « paysage ». By examining various images that evoke emptiness in Chateaubriand’s work, the text seeks to demonstrate the close relationship between space and imagination, which together create Chateaubriand’s unique « paysage ». Within this space, emptiness occupies a special place – it is not merely a visual sign of absence, but also a creative element that enables the formation of both space and the identity that emerges from it. Chateaubriand is thus an author who, in a paradoxical way, uses elements indicating emptiness to tell the story of himself and of a world that no longer exists.
