Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the nineteenth century, the modernisation process increasingly impacted Romanian society, reaching even rural areas. Significant events contributed to the reshaping of Romanian society and the formation of an elite. The church played an important role, becoming the most important institution for Romanians in the Dual Monarchy. In this context, the Orthodox Diocese of Arad, led by Bishops Ioan Mețianu and Iosif Goldiș, supported the formation of an elite among Romanians.
