Summary/Abstract: This study outlines the life and work of János Vásárhelyi in the context of his service to both the church and the Hungarian people. My aim is to present his life’s journey as an example worthy of emulation within our Church – a need I consider pressing even today, given that at the turn of this century I still encountered views questioning his legacy. Another view regarded the former leader of the Reformed Church of Transylvania as a virtual member of the second generation of teachers at the Protestant Theological Institute of Cluj. It is left to the reader to weigh these assessments and reach their own conclusions. Examining Bishop Vásárhelyi’s origins, upbringing, interests, and disposition, one is struck by how greatly fortune favoured him. From this starting point, the study traces the figures he encountered, those whose footsteps he followed, and the ways in which he found his bearings across the successive stages of his life.
