Reincarnation from a Reformed Perspective

Summary/Abstract: The question of facing death and the question of existence after death are of fundamental importance in both Christianity and Hinduism. In Hinduism, reincarnation and rebirth provide the answer to the question of existence after death, while Christianity sees the solution in resurrection and eternal life. Examining this topic within the framework of religious history, we find various forms of reincarnation belief in the early Christian period and in modern Western thought. Christianity’s twentieth-century dialogue with other religions, particularly Hinduism, also considers the relationship between reincarnation and resurrection as a fundamental motif. The examination of reincarnation and resurrection naturally brings us to both religious systems’ core teachings: the doctrine of creation, anthropology, sin and ethical conduct, and the salvation or liberation possible for humanity. Both religions trace the origin of the world and humanity to their respective conceptions of the divine, and both recognize that humans are unable to achieve their proper destiny according to the divine will through their own efforts alone. Left alone in a hostile world, humans need grace and must rely on everything that God reveals and, more fundamentally, on everything God does for them.
