Summary/Abstract: This study examines the ideal of life in Judaism of the New Testament period through the theology, piety, and way of life of the Essene community. Drawing on ancient sources, primarily the works of Josephus Flavius and Philo of Alexandria, it presents the Essenes’ radical commitment to God, their reverence for the Law, and their strict communal order. The paper analyzes key elements of their religious practice, including concepts of purity, sacred communal meals, communal ownership of property, and the process of admission into the community. The study argues that, despite the community’s small number and its highly closed character, the Essenes function in ancient representations as an expression of the Jewish ideal of character and life. In light of this, the study offers a critical assessment of the contemporary relevance of the Essene ideal of life, contributing valuable perspectives to current reflections on the good life.
