Summary/Abstract: The study summarizes the motivations for researching illustrated editions of Erben’s Kytice and the state of knowledge in disciplines that can contribute to this research: literature and art history, book culture, visual studies. To observe the relationship between text and illustration, the application of intermedial studies together with the historical poetics of the ballad genre is proposed. The case study (illustrations by Antonín Majer, 1929, Květoslav Hísek, 1961, Pavel Růt, 2002) highlights some of the generic and compositional constants of the visual transmediations. It focuses on reinterpretations of the semantics of the ballads, especially on the thematization of meanings only implied by Erben’s texts and the reevaluation of the traditional female roles in the stories. The background for this analysis is provided by a set of illustrations selected from the span of 165 years of illustrated editions, the comparison of which allows for the definition of prototypical visual representations and the identification of the changes of in time.
