Summary/Abstract: The paper examines all aspects of the life and activities of the Banja Luka Diocese during the three-decade administration of Bishop Alfred Pichler, a bishop in many ways unique in the Yugoslav context. In Serbian historiography and the wider public, Bishop Pichler is known for his Christmas letter from 1963, in which he asked for forgiveness from his “Orthodox brothers” for crimes in the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945), but so far there has been no attempt to shed more comprehensive light on his personality and the life of the Diocese he governed. To this end, new sources and literature have been used that provide a more complete insight into the bishop’s views, the church life of Roman Catholics, ecumenical activity, the attitude of the Communist Party and state bodies towards the Roman Catholic Church, and interfaith and interethnic relations in the area of Bosnian Krajina in the last three decades of the Yugoslav state.
