Summary/Abstract: The article presents the first stage of Mirosław Cygański’s (1925–2016) academic career, during which he focused on the German community in Lodz and the German occupation of Lodz during World War II. Cygański wrote his first major publication, entitled The German Minority in Central Poland, as his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of Lodz, which he later tried unsuccessfully to defend. As a young researcher, he dealt with the German occupation, publishing his second book, From the History of the Nazi Occupation. Both publications earned Cygański enemies in Germany, such as Otto Heike, a socialist from the DSAP and director of the archives in Lodz during the war. Cygański’s works describe the occupation in a descriptive manner and focus on issues of the occupation administration in Lodz.
