Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to Adolf Eichler, considered the precursor and first propagator of the idea of “foreign Germanness,” placing him in the service of National Socialist ideology. In reality, Eichler developed the Volkist-nationalist (“völkisch”) ideology, presenting it starting with the policy of Russification in the Kingdom of Poland, which then gained momentum during World War I, and finally under the pressure of Polish anti-German policy in the interwar period. Adolf Eichler, himself a foreign German and ultimately a refugee, thus became one of the most important activists of the German diaspora in the German Reich. His memoirs and commemorative book clearly show how important folk ideology became in his activist arguments for strengthening German identity in the former Russian Empire and beyond.
