Summary/Abstract: Since 1989, the democratisation of Polish society and the accompanying changes (e.g. the shifting boundaries of privacy, "media exhibitionism", adopting American-style openness in communication) have been intensifying the process of detabuisation. In the face of ongoing cultural and social changes, this article considers the question of what is currently subject to tabuisation. The issue is analysed on the basis of a survey conducted in a group of 25 female and 25 male students at Polish universities. The information collected makes it possible to identify 13 categories of modern taboo: sex, politics, family, money, mental health, religion, emotions, violence, death, romantic relationships, illness, physiology, and appearance. The article describes them in terms of the source of tabuisation and the impact of institutions that maintain their status as taboo.
