Summary/Abstract: The article offers an analysis of an individual shaped by the circumstances of the late nineteenth century. In a time when catastrophic thoughts gripped people and European values had been exhausted, a need arose to seek meaning elsewhere than before. Those most overwhelmed by the grim reality are referred to as decadents. These are tragic literary figures who lose themselves in pessimism, display self-destructive tendencies, and pursue extreme experiences. This paper analyzes the characterization of the protagonists in The Vampire by Władysław Stanisław Reymont in light of the key features of decadence. Furthermore, it provides insight into their psyche, focuses on the way how soul illness manifests itself and highlights the consequences of obsessive involvement in spiritualism, Hinduism, and love.
