Summary/Abstract: This article aims to identify and analyze several teaching strategies and methods applicable to students who wish to study Romanian during the Preparatory Year in the Romanian universities. This Romanian as a Foreign Language program prepares students from all over the world, over the courses of one academic year, to subsequently enroll in a degree program in Romania taught in Romanian (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD level). The need to diversify teaching and learning methods and strategies is imperative, considering that international students come from highly diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Adapting instructional approaches in foreign language teaching is necessary given that, in the following academic year, students will find themselves in an authentic communicative and learning context – the university environment – where a significant level of Romanian language proficiency is required to cope with the courses they will attend. When designing instructional approaches, the teacher of Romanian as a Foreign Language must consider students’ needs and motivation, as well as the objectives, methods, and strategies necessary for teaching and learning Romanian.
