Summary/Abstract: This is a translation the R. Rorty's article printed in „The New Republic” 1991, Nr 205, s. 35–39 /the translation from English into Polish Artur Mordka/ From the translator: In this article Rorty emphasizes importance of freedom in Patočka’s philosophy. Freedom and responsibility haven’t got any absolute base and it can’t be legitimated by any sciences or ideologies. A man who wants to make a decision should rather hear the voice of his conscience without being sure if he hears it correctly. In spite of it he is completely responsible for this decision and must suffer the consequences of it. Even if it is death.
