Developing a Teaching Unit with the Help of AI – The Outcome of a Search for Viable Solutions

Summary/Abstract: This article argues for the thoughtful integration of AI tools in the teaching and learning of foreign languages, using as its main argument a successful experience in creating teaching resources for a French for Specific Purposes course. The article presents a complete B1-level teaching unit focused on household appliances, employing two tools previously tested for similar purposes. These include ChatGPT, which provided the source text, the reading comprehension exercises, the presentation of lexical and grammatical content accompanied by practice and reinforcement activities, as well as written and oral production tasks. For the listening comprehension component, we created – using the Suno music generator – a song based on lyrics by Boris Vian related to the topic addressed, while ChatGPT supplied the corresponding exploitation exercises. This experience in developing pedagogical content highlighted the importance of properly formulating prompts in order to obtain relevant results, as well as the need for critical analysis and adaptation of AI-generated content before its use.
