Conversation between parents and children as an element of upbringing in the light of the old Upper Silesian press

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present the issue of parent-child conversation as an element of upbringing in the Upper Silesian press at the turn of the 20th century. The analytical material comes from the Catholic magazine ‘Rodzina. Pismo Miesięczne Poświęcone Wychowaniu i Nauce Domowej’ (‘Family. A Monthly Magazine Devoted to Parenting and Home Schooling’) (from 1888-1916). The research questions concern the contexts of the occurrence of conversation as a cue, its lexical determinants and subject matter. Also important is the aspect of the dialogical dimension of conversation (taking into account the differences between the terms dialogue and conversation), which bears the hallmarks of modernity in the context of the former model of education. The first part of the paper outlines the theoretical background related to the contemporary role of educational dialogue in the family, the characteristics of the periodical in question, and the socio-cultural and historical aspect of family issues at the turn of the 20th century. The second part is an overview of the research material showing the content and lexical determinants of parent-child conversations.
