A Critical Analysis of the Term ‘Solo Theatre’ in the Context of Slovak and Czech Theatre Studies

Summary/Abstract: The study examines the relevance of existing interpretations of the term “solo theatre” within Czech and Slovak theatre studies from the perspective of reception. The first part presents the results of the detailed archaeology of the term “solo theatre” in available scholarly, specialized, and popularizing Czech and Slovak dictionaries, primarily theatrological ones, from the late nineteenth century to the present. In the second part, the study investigates the adequacy of definitions of this term through qualitative critical content analysis using the example of two materials. The first is the anthology by Vladimír Justl et al., Divadlo jednoho herce (1989), and the second is the entry with the same title in Teatrologický slovník by Petr Pavlovský et al. (2004). The text examines these interpretations with regard to their historical context, clarity of definition, presence of fundamental staging elements, scope of expressive range, and, to a certain extent, their interdisciplinary approach. The outcome of the study is a proposed formulation of the concept, in which the term “solo theatre” is associated with the most frequently occurring forms in the analyzed sources, such as monologue, monodrama, stand-up, one-man/one-woman show, authorial reading, and similar formats.
