Summary/Abstract: Theatrical interpreting, as a category of artistic interpreting, refers to the translation and subsequent performance of a theatrical work in sign language. In the Slovak scholarly context, this specific type of interpreting has received very little attention. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted among deaf audience members, focusing on their understanding and awareness of theatrical interpreting, particularly in relation to the accessibility and reception of theatre performances. To our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind, as no comparable research has yet been carried out in Slovakia. The research methodology is based on semi-structured interviews with deaf audience members. A further aim of the paper is to outline the typology and the characteristics of artistic interpreting, which fundamentally shape the cultural and linguistic experience of deaf audience members.
