Summary/Abstract: The author considers various scopes and entanglements of the function of education for shaping the symbolic background of the identity of individuals, social groups and cultural environments. In particular, he considers the category of "landscape" as shaped by the scope and depth of emotional identity attachments between locality and globality. He also points to the dual tensions and identity pathologies that education has to face, also in the context of microsocial conditions. A particular problem is the quality of symbolic references inscribed in personal identity, and at the same time the quality of their functioning in the social space. This is important both within the framework of embedding the individual in an unchanging cultural environment and when there is a process of displacement and openness to dynamics that weaken the quality of attachment and emotional identification, as well as discernment in categories of knowledge, e.g. historical knowledge. Further, the framework of the considerations is formed by indicating two poles of identity strategies, creating a continuum through various determinisms and creative metamorphoses. The substantive background of the text consists of references to various perspectives on understanding the complexity of the world, including hermeneutics and hermeneutic sociology, critical pedagogy and semiotics of culture, psychoanalysis and theology.
