Summary/Abstract: Hanni Markel, née Kirschlager, was born into a family of Transylvanian Saxons and Landlers in Apoldul de Sus, Sibiu County. She attended primary school in her native village and the German Gymnasium in Sibiu, after which she completed her university studies at the Faculty of German Studies in Bucharest in 1962, graduating with a diploma thesis on the phonetics of the Saxon dialect of Apold.
