Summary/Abstract: The process of adopting two “new” directives of the European Parliament and the Council has been completed, aiming to “strengthen the role and independence of equality bodies (equal treatment)… from two essentially identical proposals with two legal bases.” The directives are part of secondary legislation, based on Article 19(1) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (EU), with content that includes “…binding standards in the field of equal treatment and equal opportunities for women and men in matters of employment and work, including self-employment, as well as combating discrimination based on gender, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation.” This “revises existing legislation to enhance its effectiveness,” which should remove “obstacles that equality bodies encounter in the implementation and enforcement of EU law in the field of combating and better preventing unequal treatment and discrimination…”The content of this paper comments on specific provisions of the directives to ensure adequate and equal protection against discrimination at the EU level.
