Summary/Abstract: Citizens’ trust in the institutional system represents one of the key indicators of the stability and legitimacy of all elements of the political system. Over the past decades, the institutional and judicial system in Serbia has undergone numerous reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and impartiality. This paper analyzes the level of trust that Serbian citizens have in institutions, the judiciary, and public administration units, including the factors that influence the formation of that trust. The focus will be on demographic, socio-economic, and political factors that shape citizens’ perceptions of the institutional order. The theoretical framework of the research is based on the concepts of political trust and institutional legitimacy, with special emphasis on the role of institutional literacy and the political culture of citizens. The research was conducted on a representative sample, and it examined the levels of trust in the most important institutions, such as the government, parliament, courts, and other public administration organizations. A special section of the paper will address the correlation between political attitudes and the level of trust in the institutional system, as well as differences in perception depending on educational status, age structure, and place of residence. The results provide an empirical insight into the trends of institutional trust development in Serbia and allow for further consideration of the factors that contribute to its erosion or consolidation. Moreover, the research findings may be used to formulate specific recommendations aimed at successfully overcoming the challenges facing Serbia’s institutional system. This analysis also contributes to the understanding of institutional dynamics and provides an in-depth explanation of the causal relationship in the development of the judiciary, as well as its connection with dominant social values and political culture.
