Summary/Abstract: The issue of ethics in the field of animal testing and research is considered a political and social issue and has as its ultimate goal the progress of society as a whole. The use of animals for scientific, research, experimental, educational and other purposes is considered ethically questionable and for this reason this area needs to be covered and regulated by appropriate standards, laws, practices, alternative methods and the 3R principle. The 3R principle is an acronym for three approaches that should be followed when conducting animal research and testing, namely: Reduction, Replacement and Refinement. In order to reduce, limit, replace or eliminate animal testing, intensive work is being done on the development and application of alternative methods and toxicity tests, and existing legislation plays a major role in regulating and encouraging the development of alternative toxicity tests. As the main alternative to in vivo toxicity tests, in vitro tests use animal tissues and cells for testing, rather than the whole animal. In silico toxicity tests are conducted using computers, while microdosing monitors the entry, movement, absorption and excretion of foreign substances in the human body.
