Summary/Abstract: The article examines the comprehensive legal and operational framework of the European Union that ensures a high level of protection and security for air passengers. It describes the main regulations in this area, namely Regulation (EC) No 300/2008 on airport and airline security programs, Regulation (EU) 2019/947 governing drone operations, Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 protecting passenger rights, and the GDPR guaranteeing privacy and transparency in personal data processing. The article also discusses the “blacklist” mechanism for air carriers and its impact on passenger safety. It presents the new climate obligations (“Fit for 55” and ReFuelEU Aviation 2023/2405), which require the industry to gradually increase the share of sustainable aviation fuels. Based on data from EASA and ICAO, it reviews the decline in accident rates in Europe and the sharp, though short-lived, drop in traffic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, it identifies the major challenges – such as cyber-threats, drone integration, sustainability, and biometric control systems – and proposes best practices to further enhance the EU’s safety system.
