Summary/Abstract: The present notes aim to outline the artistic stance in which the performer George Enescu found his most fulfilled mode of functioning—so regarded by Enescu himself, as well as by all those who admired him at the podium, whether they were in the audience or on stage under his direct guidance. In this first part of the study, I draw upon all identifiable statements that George Enescu formulated about the art of conducting in general, as well as about the special role it held in his own musical training and career. Since these statements are fairly numerous (even if most are succinct), I consider that, by grouping them according to certain thematic criteria, one may legitimately speak of a so‑called “Enescian poetics of conducting,” which I will furthermore observe— in the second part of this inquiry—confirmed in its essential features by various testimonies (music reviews, memoiristic accounts) of his contemporaries. At the same time, I will situate it historically within a synthetic retrospective of George Enescu’s rich career as a conductor.
