Summary/Abstract: In this article I aim to examine the ingenious compositional solution found by Arnold Schoenberg for encoding the numbers 3 and 7—fundamental elements in the sonic construction—into the eighth movement of Pierrot lunaire. Throughout the analysis, I will follow how the structuring of the musical material, the dynamic or timbral parameters, and the compositional techniques employed remain in full accord with the structure and atmosphere of Albert Giraud’s poem, which served as Schoenberg’s point of departure. I will highlight compositional strategies borrowed from the visual arts—such as the technique of focusing through contrast or by exploring the chiaroscuro relationship—given Schoenberg’s well‑known interest in painting, as well as the ways in which compositional procedures from earlier musical periods contribute to the renewal of musical language, with Baroque rhetorical figures acquiring new meaning. At the end of the article, I will attempt to answer the question: “Who might benefit from this analysis?”
