Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the concept of „narrative competence“ as a necessary condition for the correct perception of narrative texts and the realization of their primary impact. To present a clearer argumentation, the two basic concepts of narrative and competence are defined. Narrative is considered a way to preserve and transmit the eventful experience of humanity accumulated over generations, realized through a specific organization of perception, based on the active interaction of the creative and receptive consciousness. In turn, two main components are distinguished in the unified concept of “competence”. Both objective and subjective competencies are needed on the part of the reader to participate adequately in the flow of the narrative discourse to achieve a certain result. These competencies realize the main social task of narrative: to influence the construction of that system of attitudes, beliefs, values, and recommended models of social behavior that make us human again.
