Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the pledging of the largest royal estates in the Ruthenian and Bels voivodeships in the Middle Ages, where this process began at the start of the 15th century and gained momentum during the reign of Władysław III. Under Casimir IV Jagiellon, all royal estates in Ruthenia were already pledged. However, the rulers continued to use these estates by granting consent for their redemption and adding additional sums to the already pledged tenures. They also pledged the few royal estates they had recovered. Sources indicate that the rulers used the pledge of land as a political tool in the broader sense of internal politics, and less often to obtain money. The article also contains observations on the amount of the pledges, taking into account the type of currency.
