Summary/Abstract: This article aims to address a significant gap in the existing literature regarding the intellectual biography of Andrzej Wyczański (1924-2008), one of the most distinguished Polish historians specialising in socio-economic research. The centenary of his birth in 2024 offers an opportunity to examine the formative experiences that shaped this renowned historian. While this text is not, for obvious reasons, a comprehensive account of Wyczański's life, it focuses explicitly on these key experiences. Wyczański was part of a generation profoundly affected by the German occupation and the subsequent Sovietization of social and academic life. The article outlines the strategies he employed to survive and maintain the Polish 'pre-war' ethos, of which he was a notable representative.
