Summary/Abstract: The article relates to serfdom understood as an element of regulation and control of the Old Polish labour market. Simultaneously, the circulation of the documentary evidence of legal entering or quitting serfdom shows formal procedures for exchanging subjects, especially the verifi cation of labour force fl owing to the properties. The serfdom stabilised the settlement of serfs and peasants who were the foundation of the rural agricultural economics. Both the courts and the chancelleries of the strongholds, cities, and parishes worked in the circulation of the documentary evidence of the origin and legal stay of people from other properties, especially in the circumstances of starting a family. The displayed individual cases of entering or quitting serfdom prove how many factors infl uenced the creation of the rural labour market. Additionally, the work shows the close relations of people of different status and the fl exibility of boundaries between different social classes.
