The methodology of photographic interpretation and the art critic’s workshop – selected strategies

Summary/Abstract: This article explores the most common strategies for interpreting photography in contemporary writing on this medium, as identified by the author. These strategies are often interdisciplinary in nature. The selection presented is subjective, made from the perspective of an art historian and critic. The usefulness of these methods in both critical texts and art education is explored. Research strategies are identified that focus on the following issues: content analysis, the relationship between words and images, emphasizing the social conditions of production and reception, emphasizing the artistic value of photography, the anthropology of the image, somaesthetics, and psychoanalysis.
