Summary/Abstract: The designation of king Otto I by king Henry I is associated with the legal-historical concept known as the Hausordnung. This concept is based, among other things, on the interpretation of Henry I’s charter, commonly referred to as DH I 20. The following article analyses this key source and the scholarly discourse connected with it. It is demonstrated that even if DH I 20 is in fact a forged charter, the forgery still preserves a valuable historical core, since the formulation of the arenga was probably not the crucial element that motivated its creation. At the same time, the article argues that, in both scenarios, the charter cannot be regarded as a reflection of the so-called Hausordnung.
