Summary/Abstract: This article examines how the cult and iconography of Saint John the Baptist spread in Lithuanian Catholic churches from the time Christianity was introduced until the twentieth century. The study is based on an analysis of surviving artwork. It considers the positioning of images of Saint John within the liturgical space, with a focus on altars, baptisteries and other significant locations within the church. Particular attention is given to the iconography of the Baptism of Christ as the central visual theme, as well as to non-narrative representations that emphasise John’s role as baptiser and witness. The article demonstrates how a coherent and functionally stable iconographic system formed within the context of Lithuanian ecclesiastical art.
