Summary/Abstract: The article explores the relationships between emotions, feelings, stable personality traits and trust in encounters involving patients, clinicians and visualised medical data aesthetics. It defines emotions as rapid, multi-level evaluative processes, feelings as prolonged experiences of relationships, and character as a relatively consistent set of traits that influence emotional responses. The paper then discusses the aesthetics of data visualisation within the contexts of classical philosophy, empirical and experimental aesthetics, neuroaesthetics and contemporary visualisation research. It presents and develops the hypotheses of an aesthetic advantage of trust and of aesthetic arrangement, as well as posing the philosophical question for science regarding the aesthetics of visualisations. Attention is also paid to the moderators of trust in medical visualisations and to the risks of aesthetic manipulation.
