Summary/Abstract: Drawing on Josef Pieper’s study „On Hope“ and the works of Thomas Aquinas, this article presents the classical Christian teaching that hope is the only virtue that can consistently address anxiety. Having distinguished between the two existential states of man — status viatoris and status comprehensoris — the ontological situation of man as homo viator, and its connection with anxiety, fear and hope, are analysed. The fundamental connection between the virtue of hope and the fear of the Lord is discussed, as is the distinction between servile fear (timor servilis) and filial fear (timor filialis). The article reveals that, through his natural powers, man can prepare himself for the grace of the virtue of hope by cultivating the virtues of magnanimity and humility.
