Summary/Abstract: The article examines the concept of inner dialogue in Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy and its Old English translation (late 9th c.). In the medieval version, the original conversation between the imprisoned Boethius and the personified Philosophy is transformed into their inner voices – those of the soul (OE mōd) and of reason (OE gesceadwisnes). This transformation reflects the medieval interest in the complex structure of thought and the consistent continuation of the Neoplatonic tradition, emphasising the kinship of the rational human soul with the divine realm. The article shows that: 1) human essence is linked to rationality and the divine origin of reason; 2) the Old English translation refines the principle of the modes of cognition by distinguishing between the ordinary thinking and that of wise people and angels; 3) the inner dialogue in the vernacular translation reflects a cognitive structure inspired by Augustine’s Soliloquies.
