Summary/Abstract: Jacques Lipchitz (Chaim Jacob Lipchitz, Lith. Žakas Lipšicas) was born in 1891 in Druskininkai and died in 1973 in Capri, Italy; he is buried in Jerusalem. A world-renowned modernist sculptor of Litvak origin, he lived and worked in France, the United States, Israel, and Italy. He began his art studies at the Vilnius Drawing School between 1906 and 1909. In 1909, he moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, trained in the studio of sculptor Raoul Verlet, and attended drawing courses at the Académie Colarossi. He was particularly inspired by the sculpture of ancient Egypt, Greece, Black Africa, and the nomadic Scythians. In Paris, Lipchitz formed close relationships with many leading figures of modernist art and played a significant role in the history of both the École de Paris and modernist art as a whole.
