Summary/Abstract: This article examines the metaphilosophical issues that emerged in Lithuanian philosophy during the Soviet period, including considerations of the most fundamental philosophical questions, theories, principles, and methods of philosophical thought. It briefly reviews the discussions held in centres of Soviet Marxism in the 1960s and 1970s regarding the object, functions and status of Marxist philosophy, presenting the result: a multifunctional concept of philosophy. According to this concept, philosophy is a science that studies the general laws of nature, society and thought, while also performing the functions of worldview (ideology) and scientific methodology. Against this backdrop, the article discusses E. Meškauskas’s treatment of the status of philosophy, with a particular focus on its methodological function. The metaphilosophical considerations of B. Kuzmickas are introduced. He affirmed the personal, individualised nature of philosophising and polemicised with both Marxism in general and the concepts of philosophy developed by E. Meškauskas and his pupils specifically. In the Soviet context of that time, such a concept should be viewed as an attempt to initiate metaphilosophical discussions and propose an alternative to the Marxist concept of philosophy.
