Summary/Abstract: This paper undertakes a comparative legal-historical analysis of the weekly day of rest and the emergence of the earliest legal norms designating Sunday as the weekly day of rest. The concept of the weekly day of rest is closely linked to the historical, cultural, and religious heritage of individual states. At the same time, the weekly day of rest is directly connected to the realization of workers’ rights, particularly those relating to just and favourable conditions of work, the regulation of the working week, and the limitation of working hours. Legislation governing the weekly day of rest is also of significant relevance to family law, as it seeks to protect family life. The principal advocates of Sunday as the weekly day of rest were predominantly representatives of Christian churches. The paper analyses legal instruments that recognize the weekly day of rest as a fundamental labour right. Through a comparative legal analysis, similarities and differences were identified in the legal solutions regarding the weekly day of rest in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and certain European countries.
