Summary/Abstract: The legal protection of children is a modern concept dating back to the twentieth century. The first legal document promoting the protection of children was the Geneva Declaration on the Rights of the Child adopted by the League of Nations in 1924. The Geneva Declaration was adopted in an expanded and revised form by the United Nations in 1959, and the most complete legal protection of children’s rights was achieved in the Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989. Although the least known of the previously mentioned declarations of children’s rights, the Geneva Declaration created the foundations of universal legal protection of children in the 20th century. The author will try to prove in this paper that the foundations of children’s legal protection were laid by the Geneva Declaration, and that children’s rights are an extremely complex and controversial category of human rights that must continue to be developed, but also carefully monitored and controlled.
