Summary/Abstract: Hearing plays a key role in cognitive development and human communication skills. Hearing impairment significantly affects social functioning. The aim of this study is to show the complexity of verbal communication barriers resulting from hearing impairment in two age groups: children and adults. The article consists of three subsections. The first discusses the causes. The second describes how the degree of hearing loss andthe range of audible frequencies affect the ability to recognize and generate speech. The third subsection details the differences in verbal communication between children and adults with hearing impairments. Children experience delayed and distorted speech development, while adults experience a deterioration of already established language skills, withdrawal from social contact, even the risk of socialisolation and depression, and a decline in quality of life.
