Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to present a linguistic characterization of inscriptions found on religious medals. The research material was a collection from the catalog entitled Religious medals relating to the Catholic Church in all the territories of former Poland from the collection of Dr. T. Rewoliński / described and prepared for printing by the collection’s owner, Kraków 1887 (limited to inscriptions in the Polishlanguage). The first part of the paper introduces the concept of a medal by referencing dictionary definitionsand numismatic information, and subsequently places it in a religious context. The second partpresents the research material: the profile of the author and a macro- and microstructural descriptionof the catalog. The third section offers a proposal of how to use the applied methodology in the analysisof press photograph captions. The final section outlines research perspectives (models of inscriptionscorrelated with their functions, variability of linguistic phenomena, potential for interdisciplinary studies on the relationship between images and inscriptions).
